Mechanical properties of nonreinforced masonry walls

Zorislav Sorić

Abstract

A review of mechanical properties of nonreinforced masonry walls is presented. Tests used for strength determination are described. The mechanism of wall failure under compressive load is explained. Mathematical expressions for determining compressive and shear strengths, based on known strength properties of wall elements and mortar, are given. Limit values and procedures for determining shear strength and bending strength are provided. Relationships between the modulus of elasticity and compressive strength of walls are defined.
